Knee Pain, Shoulder Pain and Scoliosis

Aspiring to be the best physiotherapy clinic in Singapore, we provide comprehensive and highly effectivephysiotherapy to restore body’s integrative balance, reduce pain, and improve posture & movement.

Physiotherapists in Singapore with focus on tackling the root problems

Balance Core was established in 2013 and our therapists have henceforth treated thousands of patients. It is with the passion to treat all injuries from the root problems and prevent recurrence of injury that we have founded Balance Core Physiotherapy Centre. The fundamental causes of most musculoskeletal injuries without trauma, are to do with inappropriate movement habits which overly stress certain parts of the body beyond the tolerance level. If the underlying errors in movement habits can be accurately identified, and properly corrected, the parts of the body that are subjected to excessive stress can finally have a proper opportunity to recover fully. When the body is behaving in a healthy manner, there will be minimal chance for future injury again. Our physiotherapists have deep understanding of human biomechanics and can accurately identify the errors in each patient’s behaviors and the mechanism that lead to the injury. We are also well equipped with evidence-based and up-to-date treatment approaches, ensuring speedy and comprehensive recovery for every client.

Our Physiotherapists Can Treat

Knee Pain

Knee pain is usually not a standalone condition. Being the center joint in the lower limb, abnormal loading from the hip or ankle/foot will always alter the loading on the knee joint. When the knee is aligned ideally, the force going through the knee does not cause injury. But, when there is a combination of forces from multiple directions, such as compression and gliding or twisting, the knee is predisposed to early degeneration. Studies have shown that the majority of patients with knee pain also have weakness in their hip muscles and core control. Over time, abnormal balancing and movement strategies will be adopted.

Common knee injuries:

      1. Patellofemoral pain syndrome
      2. Chondromalacia Patella
      3. Patellar tendonitis
      4. Muscle strain
      5. Iliotibial band syndrome
      6. Ligament injury
      7. ACL injury and reconstruction
      8. Meniscus injury and meniscectomy
      9. Osteoarthritis
      10. Knee replacement

Shoulder Pain

Being the most mobile joint in the human body, the shoulder joint needs to strike a balance between mobility and stability. Your shoulders are also one of the most heavily used joints in the upper body as it can generate large amounts of force. The rotator cuff muscles have a very important role in stabilising the glenohumeral joint. They are often under heavy strain, and therefore injuries of these muscles are relatively common.

The spectrum of rotator cuff pathology comprises tendinitis, shoulder impingement and subacromial bursitis. Tendinitis refers to inflammation of the muscle tendons and it is usually due to overuse.  Over time, this causes degenerative changes in the subacromial bursa and the supraspinatus tendon, potentially causing bursitis and impingement.

Common shoulder injuries:

      1. Tendonitis
      2. Impingement
      3. Frozen shoulder
      4. Acromioplasty
      5. Rotator cuff repair
      6. Bankart repair
      7. Shoulder dislocation
      8. Multidirectional instability
      9. Fractures

Back Pain

Many people suffer from back pain and don’t recover mainly due to poor posture at work or in their daily life. As we have an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, weakness in the gluteal muscles and core region makes our back more vulnerable. Tightness in hips also contributes greatly to low back pain. Therefore, restoring the balance and mobility of the pelvic and hip region is essential to improving back pain.

We have also seen quite a number of people who try to do core strengthening exercises (such as planks, crunches, leg raises) to resolve their back pain but ended up getting more pain instead. This is because the concept of core control is poorly understood and with repeated incorrect training, it can cause aggravation instead of relief.

Common back conditions:

      1. Acute low back pain
      2. Disc Herniation
      3. Sciatica
      4. Lumbar Spondylosis
      5. Scoliosis
      6. Spinal Stenosis
      7. Fracture of vertebrae
      8. Bone spurs / osteophytes

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis usually develops during childhood and the cause is usually not clearly identified. Traditionally doctors and physiotherapists look at scoliosis from the skeletal point of view to derive treatment options. However, with a deeper understanding of the myofascial contribution to the problem, our physiotherapy approach is more robust and comprehensive.

Though scoliosis is defined as a side-bent, it always involves some degree of rotational and side-shift deformities of the spine. At Balance CORE, we adopt a unique 3D Balance Scoliosis Management to treat scoliosis. This system involves:

      • Detailed 3D postural analysis
      • Manual adjustments to reduce misalignment and structural restrictions
      • Corrective bracing (optional)
      • Specific corrective exercises and functional training to achieve optimal balance of the spine, in all 3 dimensions / planes
It helps reduce pain, prevent stiffness, improve functional performance and delay worsening of the curve, and is equally effective and beneficial for both children and adults.

Over the years of treating patients with various injuries and discomfort, we have clearly observed a persistent issue with our present-day health care practices. Most of the standard treatments are focused on solving the immediate symptoms and injuries, but little effort has been spent on identifying and intervening the underlying root causes.

Our founder Mr Michael Yan has conceptualized the Integrative Balance Principle of human function. We have been consistently helping thousands of patients recover from chronic injuries and body aches, and live a pain-free life.

The Integrative Balance Principle of human function means that in order for our body to exert force effectively to complete various tasks, the body must achieve balance of several factors at the same time, as shown in the following diagram:

When the body position or movement habits are not following the integrative balance principle, certain parts of the body will have to bear excessive force loading, or move excessively beyond the healthy range, thus leading to injury and pain. Different error movement patterns will lead to different injuries.

Based on the integrative balance principle, we have formulated a streamlined treatment process that systematically helps our patients correct their movement errors, and adopt healthy habits that is optimized to perform their functional tasks. This treatment process is illustrated below:

Our vision is to be the best physiotherapy Clinic in Singapore, and help millions of people around the world to finally stop worrying about their injuries and live a powerful life!

No, this is not a mandatory requirement to see a physiotherapist.
Xray and MRI scans are not routinely required for a physiotherapy assessment. If you have already done these scans, then it is good to bring along the films or reports when you see a physiotherapist.
A session will usually take from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the severity and irritability of the condition.

Your physiotherapist will perform a thorough assessment to evaluate the problem and identify the root course of the problem. A detailed explanation will be given so that you can fully understand your issues and the outline of subsequent treatments.

Thereafter, treatment that involves muscle release, specific muscle activation or joint mobilization will be rendered to provide symptomatic pain relief.
